Where’s the first place that comes to mind as a dog owner on a hot day?
Maybe it’s the local park, where your dog can run wild or the dog-friendly pub down the road, where you can both relax in the shade with a cool breeze. Wherever it may be, we need to ensure your dog is safe.
But before you head out, let’s be clear.
Here at Muddy Barkers, we don’t recommend taking your dog out during the hottest parts of the day. When temperatures soar, pavement burns paws and heatstroke becomes a serious risk. It’s always safest to walk early in the morning or later in the evening when it’s cooler.
That said, if you’re planning to take your dog out for a summer outing, make sure you’re fully prepared. Here’s what to bring to help keep them safe, comfortable, and happy.

- Plenty of water
Dogs can overheat quickly, and staying hydrated is one of the best ways to help them regulate their temperature.
What to pack:
- Plenty of fresh, cool water
- A portable, collapsible water bowl
Without enough water, your dog can become tired, sluggish, and more vulnerable to heatstroke. It’s always better to bring too much than not enough.

2. Dog-safe sunscreen
Yes, dogs can get sunburned—especially those with light skin, thin coats, or pink noses. Just like us, they need protection from harmful UV rays.
Apply sunscreen to:
- Nose
- Belly
- Ear tips
Never use human sunscreen, as it can contain ingredients that are toxic to dogs.
Here are a few safe and ethical options:
- My Dog Nose It! Sun protection balm – vegan and cruelty-free
- Epi-Pet Sun Protector Spray E – and change this bit vet-approved
- Warren London Dog Sunscreen – natural formula and easy to apply
- Keep dogs naked (yes, really)
At Muddy Barkers, we think dogs look best just the way they are. And when it’s hot out, clothing can actually do more harm than good by trapping heat and making it harder for dogs to cool down.
If you absolutely need to dress your dog (for medical reasons or sun protection), go for:
- Lightweight, breathable materials
- Loose fits that don’t restrict movement
But in most cases, it’s better to let them go au naturel. It’s safer, cooler, and a lot more comfortable.
- Treats and cooling snacks
Warm weather adventures can be tiring, so it’s nice to have a few cool treats on hand to keep your dog refreshed and happy.
Easy ideas:
- Frozen banana slices
- Dog-friendly ice pops
- Frozen low-sodium broth cubes
If you’re in an area where Muddy Barkers has one of our vending machines, why not swing by and grab your pup something tasty or wipes to keep them cool.
And remember—avoid giving your dog human snacks. They often contain salt, sugar, and other ingredients that aren’t good for dogs and can lead to dehydration or upset stomachs.

- Pet first aid kit
A basic pet first aid kit can be a lifesaver. You never know what might happen when you’re out and about, so it’s always smart to be prepared.
What to include:
- Tick remover tools
- Cooling towel or mat
- Your vet’s emergency contact details

At Muddy Barkers, we’re all about keeping your dog safe, happy, and ready for summer adventures. With a little planning and the right essentials, you can enjoy the sunshine without putting your pup at risk.
Stay cool, stay prepared, and as always—keep those tails wagging.
